Springdale will be assisting with the resettlement of a new family this year with Kentucky Refugee Ministries. We will need to furnish and set up the apartment and then guide the family through all the resettlement adjustments they will face in the first six months. We don’t know who the family is yet or from what country they come. We do know that there will be medical issues, and they will more than likely arrive after mid-June. That gives us a few weeks to gather things for the apartment. If you can donate a day to clean, set up an apartment or grocery shop from a prescribed list the refugee ministry team could use your help. If you have any of the following items that you would like to donate for the family, please bring them to the church.

LIVING ROOM KITCHEN BEDROOM BATHROOM
lamps table/chairs for 6 dressers towels
end tables cooking utensils chests of drawers shower curtain
television pots and pans linens waste basket
VCR/CD player tableware bedding laundry basket
side chairs wastebasket hangers cleaning supplies
vacuum cleaner mop/pail/broom lamps toiletries
clock plastic containers children’s books personal items
dictionary plastic glassware clock
tea kettle
towels/pot holders
cleaning supplies

Items need not be new, but gently used items are preferred. If you would prefer to provide financial support, please make checks out to Springdale and write “refugee ministry” on the memo line.

THE LORD’S SUPPER - Elementary children - in partnership with their families and teachers – meet in Room 210 from 11:15-noon to learn together about the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, or communion, which is a very important part of the life of the church. The sacrament is filled with meaning and is a powerful expression of our faith. Although will continue to learn about the Lord’s Supper throughout our life, it is important to offer instruction in some of the rich meaning of communion to our children. Parents and other interested adults will meet in the library, Room 209, with Mark Hinds to explore how to share the richness of the sacrament with children. Families will have a take home resource of activities to do together (and maybe with other families) over the weeks to come. The hope is to “welcome children to the table” officially on June 3rd.

SHARE IN TORNADO RELIEF

Here is the information that Mid-Kentucky Presbytery has sent re: tornado relief. It is so good to be connectional!

The first thing and continuing thing we can do is to pray—for those whose lives have changed so drastically, for all of the responders, decision makers, pastoral caregivers, suppliers. Our best response is prayer. Please pray for those in the storm-stricken communities including congregations, families, and those seeking to salvage what little the storms left behind. Also pray for strength for those offering assistance, and for those who will participate in the recovery efforts in the upcoming days and months.

You may sign up for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance’s Rapid Information Network at www.pcusa.org/pda .

To donate monies you may send a check to Springdale Presbyterian Church marked “tornado” and it will be sent to
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

OR you may send a check directly to PDA at the address below marked with the code below

OR you may go to www.pcusa.org/pda and go to “giving opportunities” in the lower left hand corner to give by credit card.

OR you can prayerfully consider your gift to One Great Hour of Sharing which is received at Easter and which goes to PDA, Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of people. ($10,000 from last year’s offering has already been released by PDA to West Liberty through Transylvania Presbytery.)

Donations for tornado relief: Address for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance – Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) P.O. Box 643700 Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700 Please put this in the check memo area: DR000015 Disaster Relief–USA Disasters & Emergencies PDA has an incredible ministry in partnership with other responders from other agencies and denominations. They are good stewards of the gifts God has given us to share.

To give your timeLeo Link and Stan Hankins will be among those helping to coordinate those who wish to minister through SPC. The massive clean-up continues in Southern Indiana in the wake of the devasting tornados of early March. Volunteers are still needed to help with debris removal and warehousing functions related to donated food and material. Anyone skilled in operating a chain saw will find plenty of work!

Those wishing to volunteer should first register with Metro United Way, 723 Spring Street, Jeffersonville (812-287-0519) — the volunteer center opens at 7:00 AM. For more information or to coordinate the formation of a work team, you may contact Stan Hankins at 426-8204 or s.hankins@insightbb.com.

See the notes below for more information and the age/ID requirements.

You will find the Volunteer Registration Form and waiver here.

We can also gather a group to make disaster kits which are stored and distributed immediately when needed. If you’d like to get a group together to do this…please let the church office know so we can get the word out. http://gamc.pcusa.org/ministries/pda/making-gift-heart-kits/#baby

Friends in Mid Kentucky Presbytery: This notice is for all who are interested in helping out with recovery efforts in Henryville, Ind. and/or West Liberty, Ky. There will be a meeting at Anchorage Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, March 7 , at 6 pm. George Hoge has received applications from Disaster Repsonse Teams in Henryville and is bringing them to the meeting. Anyone who wants to do recovery work needs an application to get into the area. We will also talk about the possible work in West Liberty. Responders need to be at least 16 years of age and must bring an ID with proof of age with them to the site. For more information please contact Donna Melloan at 502-807-6463 or 502-292-2561. Please send this out to all church members in your congregation. “Walk with Me I will walk with You, And build the land that God has planned Where love shines through” Blessings, Rev. Donna Melloan Member, Disaster Preparedness and Response Team of Mid Kentucky Presbytery

Here is some additional information if we organize our own team for West Liberty.

Dear Mid-Kentucky, Buckhorn Children and Family Services has an empty cottage on our Dessie Scott campus in Pine Ridge KY that we would be happy to make available to any Presbyterian volunteer work groups helping with the tornado recovery. It is about a 35 minute drive from the campus to West Liberty. The Cottage can accommodate 12 persons. Groups wanting more information can contact Steve Middleton the campus director at (606) 668-6445. David A. Graves President/CEO Buckhorn Children and Family Services Dear Mid-Kentucky,

Friends, We have received a number of calls and emails from around the presbytery concerning the storms Friday evening and how we can respond. Let me tell you what has happened thus far, and what plans we are putting in place to respond in the weeks ahead. As you know from the news media, the town of West Liberty suffered terrible destruction, but that community is not alone. Rev. E.G. Clark, pastor at Jackson and Ezel, reports that Ezel was also hit hard by the storms. I have been in contact with John Robinson from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and we are processing an immediate financial response of $10,000. (By the way, these monies come from your offerings last year to the One Great Hour of Sharing – a fact that you might use in promoting this year’s Easter offering). John Robinson is also working through the PDA program to put together an emergency response team which will be traveling to the region and will coordinate with E.G. Clark the Presbyterian response on a longer term basis. Presbyterians are well known for our quick response, but also for our staying power. Long after a disaster drops from the front pages of our papers, the Presbyterian efforts continue. Our Mission Committee is also organizing Transylvania’s immediate and continuing response, and, as we know more about the needs, we will communicate with you about the exact kind of help that you can provide. Disaster kits are always needed. Here is a link that has information regarding what is included in those kits: http://gamc.pcusa.org/ministries/pda/making-gift-heart-kits/#baby . Right now we all need to keep in our prayers those who have been victims of the storms, here in Transylvania and throughout the multiples states hit by these storms. Pray for the victims and also pray for those who are working to bring aid to these individuals and communities. Richard Transylvania Presbytery

The misty rain and the snarled traffic could not stop people from gathering for the Ground Blessing for the Bill Martin Habitat House on September 24. The framing was going up when the workers paused for lunch and the ground blessing. They were joined by the Martin family, some who had traveled from other states, congregation members from Springdale and other Mid-Kentucky Presbytery churches, the family advocate, and the family–Breshia and Keith. The children from A Place to Call Home elementary class shared a choral reading as a part of the ground blessing. Breshia and Keith shared their thanks for the partnership and the group prayed blessing upon each nail and board and upon the home it would become. Thanks be to God!

Building continue each weekend. Check out the Habitat Group on the Springdale Facebook page. Note that the youth will be painting on October 29th!

What does it mean to live n a culture where generosity is the norm? Where we live out of abundance rather than fear? Where God’s call is central to our lives as individuals and as a congregation? Where we think about giving not just our money, but our time, our giftedness and consider our stewardship of creation and of our whole life? What does this look like practically in our everyday lives?

As a congregation we will be thinking and praying and exploring together in worship, and as John Davis facilitates a class on Sunday mornings September4 and 11. One opportunity to respond to what we learn about our call together will be on October 23 during worship.

Children and youth grow in faith

Springdale’s children and youth will have lots of opportunities to stretch their spiritual wings and deepen their relationship with God this fall.

Wee Believe is the wonderful curriculum which will be used to guide the 4 year olds, 5 year olds and kindergartner – 4/5/Ks - as they learn about God’s people like Abraham and Sarah. This group will meet at 11:15 a.m. in room 100.

A Place to Call Home is the place for elementary-aged children to learn about and be an active part of the ministry of Habitat for Humanity. The children will actually help build the shed which will go on the property of our Habitat partner. Parents are invited to be a part of this building experience, too. As the children learn about Habitat for Humanity they will also explore
the Biblical concepts of home and hospitality. There will be drama, Bible study, games, art and hands-on-learning as they build together. This group will meet at 11:15 a.m. in the youth area.

All children can be a part of The Way of the Child worship learning spaces on Sunday mornings at 8:50 a.m. on 1st and 3rd Sundays when Issues class begins.

What would you think of a class whose text is an anti-workbook? The middle school youth, 6th-8th graders, will be a part of a
very exciting, action based, thoughtful curriculum called re:form. This class will meet in room 107 at 11:15 a.m.

High school youth are at a point in their lives where their faith is deepening and stretching, becoming more relational and reaching out to others.

This group will be sinking their teeth into Faith Questions beginning September 18 in room 108. On September 4 and 11 they, as active members of the church, will be meeting in the Klein Chapel with John Davis and adults as the class considers Creating a Culture of Generosity.
