Worship at Springdale Presbyterian Church
Springdale’s worship service lies at the core of our identity. What happens when we gather on Sunday morning shapes everything we do when we scatter to be Christ’s disciples in the world. We have featured two types of very different services in the past. God is too big to be confined to a single “style” of worship; the different styles allows us to play across a much wider artistic field. Learn more about our approach to worship.
10 a.m. Sunday – Combined Service Worship This Week and Special Services
The popular Combined Service held during Summer 2011 is continuing into the Fall. It features elements of both Celebration Worship and Traditional Worship, described below.
Celebration Worship
Celebration Worship has a more casual feel. It features drums and guitars with a team of vocalists leading the music, and the congregational music selections are shaped accordingly. Lyrics, video, and still images are displayed on a large screen. During our prayers of the people, everyone is invited to express their concerns or testify of God’s blessings, so the rest can join them in petition and thanksgiving. During communion, congregants move to stations to receive a portion of bread and dip it into a cup.
Traditional Worship
Traditional Worship has a more formal feel and is anchored by traditional choirs, pipe organ, and handbells. Hymnals and printed liturgy are featured. Prayers of the people are spoken by one person, either a pastor or liturgist. These prayers are selected or written by the leader for that morning’s worship service to express the community’s joys and concerns. During communion, we pass bread cubes and small cups to people who remain in their pews.
Special Services
Special services are offered during holidays, other times of the church calendar and for special needs. Those include:
- Christmas Eve: 5 p.m. candlelight-family oriented; 8 p.m. candlelight-traditional; 11 p.m. candlelight-celebration worship with communion
- Ash Wednesday: 7 p.m.: imposition of ashes
- Maundy Thursday: 7 p.m. with communion
- Easter: 6:30 a.m. Sunrise service with Grace Hope Presbyterian at the harbor on the Louisville waterfront, followed by breakfast at Grace Hope
- Advent: Service of Comfort and Hope
